Duty free shopping at Heathrow Airport is offered to passengers travelling outside the EU, along with additional tax free shopping. For those passengers travelling only within the EU or International long haul, tax free shopping is available.
Please be advised on the duty free allowances ruled by Customs – applicable on duty free at Heathrow Airport - along with prohibited items and those items restricted for entry into the UK from certain destinations.

Shopping prices for tax free purchases exclude Value Added Tax, which stands currently at 17.5%. You will find price labels outlining prices both before and after tax, enabling you to calculate your tax free savings.
Your duty free and tax free savings will be deducted upon payment. In some instances tax may need to be paid on items once landed for destinations outside the EU, and in some cases when bringing back purchases. Many items however, such as duty paid, newsagents, bookstores and pharmacy products are excluded from this ruling.

Tax free and duty free allowances depend upon a traveller’s last destination.
If arriving into the UK, having departed from the EU, these items are excluded from custom duty.
- 250g of tobacco, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos
- Alcoholic formulas 22% or stronger up to 1 litre, or fortified, sparkling or table wine or other liqueurs up to 2 litres.
- 250ml of toilet water and 50g of perfume
- Souvenirs and other such goods not to exceed £145
- Items purchased whilst in the EU where tax and duty is paid are unlimited
Duty Free for the Channel Islands is treated as a country outside of the EU remit. Items entering the UK where tax has been paid, no additional duty or tax will need to be settled upon UK arrival.
Please note, all tobacco and alcohol purchases should be carried by the traveller and for their own use, or as gifts. Should Customs Officers suspect that any goods have been purchased for resale or payment they will be regarded as commercial use and you will be subject to checks and enquiries by a Customs Officer .
You may be asked the reason for purchases, along with quantity and type. Your usual consumption and frequency of travel. Officers will consider whether goods are visibly displayed or concealed. Suspicions by Customs Officers increase should amounts over quantities showed below be imported:
- 3,200 cigarettes
- 200 cigars
- 400 cigarillos
- 3kg tobacco
- 110 Litres of beer
- 90 Litres of wine
- 10 Litres of spirits
- 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
Items will be permanently detained should Officials regards the imported items for commercial use.
The same rule applies should you be found selling tobacco or alcohol goods – if found guilty, participants would face a prison sentence of up to seven years. Individual laws apply in many Countries on alcohol and tobacco allowances.
In some cases you will be required to carry paperwork confirming items in your possession. If you are transporting restricted products in larger quantities it is best to check with the Country’s Authorities before purchase.
NB – selected Countries in the EU have specific policies for cigarette and tobacco products. |
