London Heathrow Airport brings both pros and cons for those living in the surrounding areas, from a large amount of business and generation of jobs, to air and noise pollution

Living Near Heathrow Airport ...

Airport redevelopment at London Heathrow is a constant project, with the current construction of Terminal 5 and a potential new runway in the future.

More About Living Near Heathrow...

London Heathrow Airport has created a master plan that outlines how the airport will expand in the future, with £4.2 billion set aside for Terminal 5, and a further £3 billion planned for investment to rejuvenate the rest of the airport over the next ten years.

The plan also outlines a possible third runway at the airport, subject to stringent environmental conditions being met.

The government is currently carrying out studies on the feasibility of additional runway capacity at Heathrow and will report back towards the end of 2006. In the meantime, Heathrow has published the master plan to provide a framework with which to consult with all of its stakeholders, including the local communities.

The plan contains a map in response to the White Paper's request that a boundary for the development of a third runway should be identified and safeguarded. As any potential development is still years away, BAA Heathrow has included a map which is an amalgamation of the various boundaries previously published.

Depending on the final scheme, any potential development could affect up to 700 houses, and therefore, BAA Heathrow will shortly be publishing property blight schemes to assist those homes which may be blighted by these plans.

For next steps, the airport master plan has been prepared as a consultation document so that BAA Heathrow can receive feedback from all its stakeholders regarding the work it proposes to do to develop the airport.

The consultation period continues until the end of October 2005 and an updated interim master plan is likely to be published during 2006.

Air and noise pollution is therefore a concern for the local London Heathrow community.  The proposed airport expansions will come alongside improved operations and landscaping to minimise the effect, and environmental concerns will also be carefully considered.

The airport expansion however will also create more jobs, act as even more of a hub for regular flyers and also improve London’s tourist trade.
