London Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport, and regarded as the hub of the aviation world. Around 90 airlines are based at Heathrow, serving over 180 destinations in over 90 countries.

Passenger Information

The airport operates four terminals, with a fifth currently under construction.

The check-in area and subsequent boarding gate will depend on your chosen airline and destination.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 Check-in

All UK and Ireland flights from Heathrow operate from Terminal 1, as well as some European and long-haul destinations.

What do I need to know about standard, self service and day before check-in?

Standard Check-in

On arrival at the airport, monitors showing flight numbers, information and each flight’s check-in zone are available at the entrance to the Terminals.

The illuminated yellow cubes ensure the check-in zones are clearly visible.

As passengers enter London Heathrow Airport Terminal 1, check-in can be found on the first floor of the terminal building.

Please see your airline ticket for advice on check-in. As a general rule, passengers should follow the check-in times below:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS prior to departure (El Al passengers should allow 3½ hours)
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

Self Service Check-in

Self Service check-in is a much quicker alternative to normal face-to-face check-in, saving time on your journey through London Heathrow Airport.

Simply check-in via the airport kiosk or online where available, and take your bags to the fast bag drop off location.

As of April 2006, the following Airlines offer self service check-in at Terminal 1 via kiosks located near the standard check-in desks or online:

  Airline Check In Type
  Aer Lingus Kiosk*
BMI British Midland Kiosk* (Please note that if you
are travelling on a standard or
bmibaby tiny fare, you must
use the self check-in
machines)
British Airways Kiosk & Online* - Click Here
GB Airways (Via BA kiosks) Kiosk & Online* - Click Here

*Please note that some passengers and flight destinations are not eligible for self service check-in. Please confirm if this service is available to you at the time of booking or visit the airline website to find out about service limitations.

More and more Airlines are offering self service check-in, so passengers should contact their Airline to check if they offer the service. To see a list of airlines who offer online check-in visit our Online Check-in Page.

Passengers that check-in at a kiosk or online still need to arrive at the Airport in good time to catch their flight.  Pay close attention to information from Airlines regarding collecting boarding cards, dropping bags and arriving at the gate.

Boarding normally begins approximately 45 minutes before departure at London Heathrow Airport.

Passengers should keep checking the television monitors closely for the flight departures to your destination, boarding time and gate number.
