Having recognised that the additional security checks impose inconvenient delays to travellers, BAA has invested both time and effort, in association with the Department for Transport and Airlines, in reducing security queues across the entire airport.

Over 1,200 security officers have been recruited at Heathrow Airport. In Terminal 5 alone there are two security zones, one at either end of the terminal, with 20 security lanes in use at all times. This means that the time passengers spend waiting for the necessary security checks is vastly reduced, as newer and faster security technologies have been applied. The use of such technologies means that security at Terminal 5 aims to limit the queue time to a maximum of 5 minutes.
In addition, security at Terminal 5 is also considering the use of body scanning and biometric testing for International and Domestic passengers that will pioneer airport security.
