From conception through to completion the environment has been a huge consideration whilst planning and building Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. The effects to the environment from Terminal 5 are detailed here.

The Environment And Heathrow Airport...

The whole of the Terminal 5 building has been built giving the utmost of attention and care to the environment.  As such, it exceeds the Building Regulations requirements to meet 2001 PartL and actually complies fully with PartL 2006. This is due to the energy and efficiency fixtures and fittings deployed through the building.  Also, at all times, retailers are requested to condense their waste and packaging.  In addition, passengers using the terminal are encouraged to consider the environment, for example, using the correct recycle bins through the airport.

Read on for more detailed information regarding the environment and Heathrow Airport’s measure to protect it:

• Waste management

• Water

• Lighting
• Heating

Terminal 5 Waste Management...

During the construction of Terminal 5 all contractors where made to fully manage their waste.  As such all waste facilities were managed and collection services for correct disposal and recycling operated through the airfield site and the terminal building site.

What’s more, now fully operational, retailers and passengers alike are asked to use the correct recycling and waste management facilities.  Both of these measures contribute to BAA’s target of either composting or recycling 40% of its waste by 2010, and an impressive 70% by 2020.

Heathrow Terminal 5 Water...

A rainwater harvesting scheme, that has the potential to reuse around 85% of rainfall, along with the use of borehole water, provides the new terminal building with 70% of its non-potable water needs.  This airport rainwater harvesting scheme is the biggest of its kind in Europe.

Terminal 5 Lighting...

The entire construction of the Terminal 5 building reduces the dependance of artificial lighting as all the building’s facades are glazed.  Angled louvers have also been used to prevent the building overheating.
The modern lighting system is highly sophisticated and operates through a control system that reduces and increases the lighting according to whether the current daylight is sufficient and whether areas of the building are in use.

Terminal 5 Heating...

Only energy efficient fittings have been used through the building, with the only centrally-chilled water supplied by ammonia chillers is used to reduce the temperature.  This eliminates the need for air conditioning units along with refrigerators and HFCs in similarly used equipment.
Also, waste heat is collected from a plant in the south of the airport and is recycled within Terminal 5.  This recycled heat meets the requirements of 85% heating needs.  Plus it has lead to an 85% reduction in CO2 of 11,000 tonnes per year and the same percentage in reduced gas consumption.
