| Consider the following if you are planning to take your mobile phone away with you: |
|
| |
- You will need to make sure your mobile is International Roaming enabled - your Network provider will do this for you. However, this can take up to 14 days to activate so make sure you leave plenty of time.
- When calling your Network provider check your mobile is compatible for the country your are travelling too - America, for instance, needs a tri-band handset.
- Check with your Network provider how much International Roaming will cost you as charges vary greatly from those within the UK. Confirm current charges before you leave as they can change at short notice. Always make sure you check with your Network provider how much calls and texts will cost you, and the recipient, as the prices can be very expensive - much more than in the UK, and vary Network to Network.
- Explain that you are travelling abroad with your mobile and ask your Network provider if there are any special discounts on International Roaming packages.
- Enquire as to the Network's cheapest foreign calling tariff as it may be possible to switch before you travel.

If you intend to use your mobile a lot when abroad... |

| Check with your provider and enquire if it is possible to change tariff to one that includes cheaper monthly fees for calling abroad. It is worth considering if this will be cost effective long term as you may have to commit to a longer term tariff. |

Sometimes, by using an alternative SIM card in your handset, it is cheaper for calling when abroad. The SIM card is the small chip that fits into your phone, allowing you to make and recieve calls.
Heathrow Airport, and other international airports, plus some highstreet retailers, sell international SIM cards for foreign networks. Do make a note of when your international SIM card expires so you are not caught unawares at any point. |

Once you reach your foreign destination, and your phone is switched on, you will be routed to a local phone transmitter. So even though, for example, you maybe in France, your phone still acts as if you are UK based. So the call you make in France, to a French number, will still be routed via the UK - hence why calling internationally can cost a small fortune!
That equates to a huge 1,800 mile round trip for one call, probably only a few miles away. What's more, the person recieving your call or text will also be charged. So do remember to check with your Network provider on better deals for calling from abroad. |

Security and Your Mobile Phone Abroad ... |
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
In the event of your phone being lost or stolen keep a note of your mobile's serial number (known as the IMEI number), your mobile number (it's surprising how many of us don't actually know this!) and your Network provider's customer services number (see above). Also, give your Network provider a call before you depart to check on their proceedure for lost and stolen phones so you are fully aware on what you need to do.
Should the worst happen and your mobile is lost or stolen contact your Network provider immediately. They can block the phone and/or SIM card.
